Counter-Drone Detection: Why Sensing Comes First
September 22, 2026 · 5 min read · Arctivus Insights
Small drones are hard to see, hard to classify and easy to buy. Effective protection starts with layered detection.
Small drones are now inexpensive and widely available. Most are flown legally, but some pose risks to airports, defence sites, prisons and critical infrastructure.
No single sensor solves the detection problem. Radar can see small targets but may confuse them with birds. RF sensors detect control links but not autonomous flights. Cameras confirm and classify but have limited range.
The most effective systems fuse several sensors into one picture and present it clearly to trained operators. Good detection reduces false alarms and gives decision-makers time to respond appropriately under the law.
